Nursing Orientation

On November 21, 2008, I went to the Nursing Orientation at the college.

Since I was unable to respond before November 12th, they put me on alternative instead. And so instead of being in the Spring 2009 class, they put me in the Summer 2009 class. That's April 2009. I thought that's even better coz Spring class (which is in January 2009) is too soon for me. But any changes they make, I'm always flexible. That is the key for a good nurse, flexibility.

After I picked up my packet, I signed my name on the sheet. I looked for a place to sit, and guess who I saw? KEVIN!!! Good 'ol Kevin. We used to work together. He said, "Hey!!!" I turned back and said, "Oh hey!!! Oh, what a small world." He said, "You too, got called." I said, "Yes!! And wow, I missed you all in that hospital." When I quit the hospital, every single one of my friends quit too. I said, "Hey, I miss Joemar!!!" Kevin just smiled at me. I end up sitting with him. And then the Orientation began. Each one of us have a Manual, Documentation Packet Instructions, the Copy of the Presentation. After being quiet, I wandered my eyes around the room. This is a big group.

There are 2 groups during the Nursing Orientation. One for the Spring 2009 and the other for the Summer 2009. In each class there are over 300 students; so altogether there are over 600 of us!! Before Dr. D**** gave the presentation, each one of us identified our name, place of work, and where we from. About 98% of the students in the class are employed in the hospital. There's even a grandma there, so being an older student, heck I don't feel bad at all. Dr. D**** said that our college is the LARGEST Nursing School in the state of California. It is rated 3rd BEST Nursing School nationwide. I'm proud to be part of the system. Here in the valley the medical is the central field. Anyway, on the screen projected a poetry of:

Being a NURSE means... )

So many things we need to acquire before the Program starts. First off, we are all candidates for the Program. We need to take the TEAS test with a passing grade of 67%. Then we also need to pass all the medical exam such as MMR, CPR, HEP, TB TEST, VARICELLA, and so forth. When I read the letter and said that we need to pass the TEAS test, I said to myself, "Uh-oh!!!" Immediately I asked my husband what is this and he said to google it. And so I did. It is like any other test when you do an entrance for a college. It's a test about your math, science, reading, and comprehension. And it says, it cost $49 dollars to download the Pre-TEAS test. Oh shoot, I have to spend money for the test? Sure. I didn't mind. Anything I could just to get into this program. Heck, I've waited for over 2 years, I will not slip this out of my hands.

When Dr. D**** announced that we have to take the TEAS test, she said she will give each one of us a "Pre-Test Study Manual" to take home and study!!! Oh good. Now I save $49 dollars. Instead, I could prolly used that fluffing, right? If you don't know what I meant by "fluffing" never mind. My FF friends knows what I'm talking about. Anyway, we are all given choices when to take the test. I think the test goes on December 1, 3, 4, 7, and 10. I picked December 10th. The more time for me the better. She said while were in the program we will be in clinical on Psychiatric and Med Surg. We will be assigned to our own group. The Yellow team, the Blue team, the Orange team, the Green team...and I don't know what team I belong to just yet. Because like I said, they've put me on "alternative". And so Miss B**** will send my Class Registration, she will automatically enroll us in the class we need to take for the first semester. Then the "assigned sheet" which group I will be will be assigned then. We'll have to wear our uniform during clinical training. Our uniform is a white pants, red t-shirt, and a white vest. We'll have to purchase all that in the bookstore. We cannot customize it, it's compulsory to buy it in the bookstore.

The Nursing Program takes 18 months to finish. NO SUMMER BREAK. We are expected to work 70 hours per week, if we want to pass this. Study...study...and study... I already heard some of my friends said to me, "This is not easy. It's hard." And so, I am READY!!!! I will go thru the hell of gates if I have to, just tell me what to do and I will perform.

This Orientation took 3 hours and 45 minutes. I have drink some coffee before I went to the class and at the end of the class, I really, really NEED to pee!!! So many things to do, the documentation is almost scary. That's the way it is, even in the real actual work of Nursing, I recall hubby said to me during his first day at the hospital, "I'm so glad that I didn't just graduate from school because if I just did, I would've quit by now!!!" Sounds scary, eh? And so, I already know what to expect. So, I must perform well. Following Instructions in the Nursing world is the most IMPORTANT. If you can't follow instruction, it means you cannot follow the Doctor's order. And you will mess someone's life by giving them the wrong medication. As far as training each other is concerned, Dr. D**** was kinda funny. She said, "You will give each other injections. You will take each other blood. But you don't have to do each other's foley." OMG!!!!! Thank goodness for that. I don't think I'd like anybody to practice on my butt. LOL!!! That would be too embarrassing. Let the dummy have it. :D

After the long Orientation, I went to the Administration office and enrolled myself. Took me another hour. So by the time I got there, it was like 5:00 PM. Called Rachel, "Guess what? I will make you a preposition. How about dinner at the Mexican Restaurant. Then we will go to a Beauty Salon and get myself a haircut. Wanna join me?" She said, "YES!!" And so that's what we did exactly. I cut my hair shorter. Well, I didn't really wanna cut my hair that short, but the hairstylist have just cut it shorter than I would think. My hair was down to my chest, and as you can see on the photo below, it is now just a little below on my shoulders. I thought wearing a ponytail is always a must and so the shorter it is the better. On that photo I am wearing my "natural" curl. I love the "wash and wear" look. When I'm on clinical training and studying so hard, I don't have much time to fuss with my hair." Fifteen minutes and I'm done!!! That's the way with me nowadays. I don't wear a whole lot of make-up either except for a little bit of eyeshadow and the bare minerals powder. No lipstick. No mascara. No nail polish. My nails are short. And so, I'm just a simple girl with a simple dream. And that my dream is to "make a difference" and help God finish His mission. Anyway, I start school on Summer 2009 and I graduate on December 2010.

P.S. I forgot to mention on this JOURNAL, after 2nd semester of Nursing school, I am qualified to be an EXTERN. It's like an INTERN. While an Intern doesn't get paid, the Extern gets paid while on training.
